چکیده

BACKGROUND AND AIM Diabetes mellitus is known to cause neurological disorders due to impaired glucose metabolism involving decreased utilization of glucose by the brain tissues. The mechanisms responsible for failure of glycemic regulation in type-2 diabetes leading to neurological impairment need to be thoroughly elucidated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Type-2 diabetes was induced in albino rat models with alloxan monohydrate (40 mg/kg i.v.). Cerebral cortex and medulla oblongata were investigated 48 h after alloxan administration for the alterations in proteolytic activity. RESULTS Diabetes caused an elevation (P < 0.001) of blood glucose and also proteolytic activity in the brain. CONCLUSION Impaired glucose metabolism in the brain was the key factor which was responsible for the elevated (P < 0.001) proteolysis leading to brain dysfunction.

Study of the antidiabetic activity of Punica granatum L. fruits aqueous extract on the Alloxan-diabetic Wistar rats

Pancreatic β-cells dysfunction and impairment of insulin action usually leads to hyperglycemia. Punica granatum L. is a well-known traditional herbal remedy in Iran due to its positive effects on ameliorating blood glucose homeostasis. In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare the pomegranate fruits aqueous extract (PE) on glucose and lipid metabolisms in normal and Alloxan-induced dia...

Hypoglycemic Activity of Casearia esculenta Roxb. in Normal and Diabetic Albino Rats

The hypoglycemic effect of ethanolic extract of Casearia esculenta was investigated on alloxan induced diabetic rats. The blood glucose levels were measured at 0, 1, 2 and 3 h after the treatment. The ethanolic extract of C. esculenta (250 mg/kg) reduced the blood glucose of normal rat from 85.50±1.22 to 64.67±3.27 mg/dl, 3 h after oral administration of the extract (P
